Strong Minds, Strong Communities
Welcome! ¡Bienvenido! مرحباً!
Strong Minds, Strong Communities is a free program designed to give North Carolinian adults 18+ that speak English, Spanish, or Arabic simple tools to improve the way they think, act, and feel. Through 10, one-on-one psychoeducational skills sessions and referrals to local resources, Strong Minds can help adults improve their health and well-being!
Our Background
Mental health disorders are highly prevalent with depression and anxiety affecting around 34% of the population. There is an acute shortage of mental health professionals, with fewer having the linguistic capacity to address the mental health needs of non-English speakers. Further, mental health care is quite expensive. Strong Minds seeks to mitigate both barriers by utilizing Community Health Workers to support health service navigation and outreach as well as directly delivering an evidence-based psychosocial intervention. Shifting mental health services to Community Health Workers allows participants to access the program in their native language (currently English, Spanish, and Arabic), in a setting comfortable to them (virtual or in person), at completely no cost thanks to generous funding from the Department of Health and Human Services.
Our Impact
Strong Minds is an evidence-based, clinically effective psychosocial skills-based intervention targeting depression and anxiety symptoms and client activation. The program has proven clinical effectiveness: in a randomized control trial comparing the Strong Minds program to a case management control condition, Strong Minds program participants experienced clinically significant reductions in symptoms of anxiety and depression and increased overall functioning. Further, Strong Minds participants reported extremely high program satisfaction, expressing satisfaction towards the program staff, Community Health Worker, program material, and care management.
Our Continuing work
Strong Minds operates a central Community Health Worker Training hub at UNC Greensboro providing leadership, training, and technical support for the implementation of the Strong Minds program across the state of North Carolina. This hub ensures ongoing program compliance, fidelity, and program tracking to ensure program efficacy and success. In addition, this hub allows access to UNCG’s best clinical, cultural, and community experts to provide continual support. UNCG will release yearly Request for Applications for organizations to seek funding to train Community Health Workers on the Strong Minds program. UNC Greensboro offers direct services to clients throughout North Carolina virtually or in person or will connect clients to a partner organization more local to them in Guilford, Forsyth, Wake, Mecklenburg, or Orange counties.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Strong Minds program is designed for adults 18+. It is not available for youth currently. Adults that are feeling stressed, worried, or overwhelmed can be a great fit. Have you been unable to stop worrying? Do you have trouble sleeping? Are difficulties piling up? Strong Minds could help you!
Strong Minds is a 10-session program. We will aim to schedule your program sessions weekly, but participants have a total of 6 months to complete the program in case additional time is required.
Absolutely. Our Community Health Workers (CHWs) will try to accommodate to your needs, whether you need sessions on the weekends or in the afternoons, we will try to find the time you need.
No. All sessions are individual. That means it will only be you and your CHW. You may also get calls from other members of our team for follow-up calls or resources.
Strong Minds will connect you to resources offered in your area and will inform you about them so you can choose the best fit for you. Strong Minds cannot make any guarantees about the kinds of resources we can support with, but we will make every best effort to connect you to the resources that match your needs.
Strong Minds is not therapy! Strong Minds is 10-session skills-based program that will focus on giving you the tools to overcome difficulties that you might be having in your day-to-day life. While we focus on changing behaviors, your mind will greatly benefit from these changes. If additional support would be helpful after completing our program, we would gladly assist in connecting you to other mental health services.
Yes! We would love for you to do that. Some people might be eligible while others won’t, but you can refer as many people as you want.
Yes! Everything you share with us will be kept between you and our Strong Minds team. We will capture information that you share, such as your mental health symptoms and your resource needs, in aggregate form so that we can monitor your progress and make program improvements. We will never share or distribute any identifiable information about you with anyone outside of our team. If there is an emergency, such as reports of harm to self or others, we may be required to report to the appropriate authorities.
The Strong Minds program is completely free to you regardless of income or insurance. We will never ask for any payments.
The program is currently offered in English, Spanish, and Arabic. We will continue to update if it becomes available in more languages. The program does not use interpretation.
The first step is to complete a Screener to determine your eligibility. If you are eligible, you will proceed to receive 10 sessions with a community health worker. In these sessions, you will learn strategies to better manage your stress and worries. You will also have the option to complete a 6-month follow-up.
The program can be offered in person or virtually, through video or phone calls. Strong Minds currently has implementation sites across the state of North Carolina, currently including sites in Guilford, Forsyth, Wake, Mecklenburg, and Orange Counties. If in person sessions are preferred, we can ensure that you are seen by a CHW who lives most local to you.
Throughout your participation you will work closely with a Community Health Worker (CHW) to learn skills to manage and improve your symptoms. You may also be contacted by other staff members when completing follow-up interviews and connecting with resources. CHWs have received extensive mental health training and are fully equipped to support your care under the supervision of a licensed mental health professional.
We understand sometimes you won’t be able to complete a session. We ask you to notify your CHW 24 hours in advance. If you fail to notify your CHW that you can’t attend your appointment, there will be no penalty or charge, however, we may have a conversation about your attendance.
While we would love to support you in completing the full 10 program sessions, you are welcome to end participation at any time. We only ask you to let us know when you no longer want to participate.
Not everyone who is interested in the Strong Minds program qualifies. We have all interested participants complete a brief screener assessment to make sure that they are a good fit for the program. If you are not eligible for the program at this time, we would be glad to try to help connect you to other resources that better fit your needs!

The Strong Minds, Strong Communities program at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro has launched a state-wide dissemination of its mental health program in collaboration with the NC Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Mental Health to address workforce shortages and expand access to mental health care. As part of our grant funding, Strong Minds will train up to eight Community Health Workers yearly at up to two sites across North Carolina. We anticipate releasing a Request for Applications each fall for interested organizations to apply to receive our training. Organizations selected through this RFA will support program dissemination by using funds for 2 full-time or 4 part-time Community Health Workers, 1 part-time licensed clinical supervisor, and 1 part-time site leader to expand access to quality, culturally competent mental health care.
Strong Minds implementation sites will identify 2-4 community health workers to complete the Strong Minds training program and document all screener assessments and program sessions utilizing the Strong Minds data tracking system. Training consists of three phases lasting about 6 months. During phase one, Community Health Workers will complete a webinar-based training and will complete and audio record two 10-session role plays to be listened to for feedback and coaching by a clinical supervisor and/or peer support Community Health Worker. During phase two, Community Health Workers will enroll their first cases, to be reviewed for fidelity and feedback. During phase three, 10% of ongoing sessions will be reviewed for feedback, oversite, and coaching. Community Health Workers will be certified to continue providing the Strong Minds intervention based on attendance at the training and achieving at least 80% adherence to intervention fidelity. Continuing education opportunities will be provided ongoingly.
Interested Community Health Workers and organizations should check back here for our annual RFA release, or they can contact the Project Director, Claire Poindexter, at [email protected] for the current training status and to express interest.
